Elsewhere and Others
- Lorena Miré
- A fantastic, hilarious, great friend. A brilliant songwriter. And that voice…
- Diane Ward
- Wouldn't know where to begin. No one should have a voice this amazing; gorgeous, infectious songs make it doubly unfair. Go. Listen. Now.
- Magda Hiller
- Speaking of killer voices and songwriting, you must hear Magda. Funky, bluesy, jazzy and utterly wonderful.
- Brian Franklin
- I aspire to be Brian. We all do, in some way. Anyways, go listen. Trust me.
- Glen Phillips
- The voice of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen has only gotten better since. Catch one of his solo shows as soon as you possibly can.
- Scott Andrew
- Remember when "Pop" meant something good? Still does. Really, really good.
- Melissa Ferrick
- Melissa just kicks my ass in so many ways. If I had to pick just one disc, I'd go with the killer "Skinnier and Faster - Live". If I didn't, I'd also add in "Listen Hard". And so I have.
- Humbert
- When I think of Humbert, I picture Bugs Bunny dressed as Carmen Miranda, Conga-ing around a supper club. Humbert Humbert HumBERT. Humbert Humbert HumBERT. Not that they sound anything in the world like that. But I'm pretty sure the visual was inspired by Ferny, somehow.
- Grant Livingston
- Upbeat, funny songs about death. And so much more.
- EMusic
- Killer, legit MP3 source with an appropriately-priced subscription model. All sorts of great stuff here - Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Emily Remler, Newport Jazz Festival collections, Buffalo Tom, Kinks, tons of old and new punk stuff, George Jones… If the record industry as a whole ever gets their shit together, it might look a lot like this. Or are we all just pleased as punch with the whole no-burning, proprietary format, you're-only-renting-the-songs concept?
- Paul Roub on MySpace
- Gig listings, downloadable songs, and stuff. Just like here. But… on MySpace.
- Visibone
- Bob Stein is the man. Genuinely usable HTML color ref, for starters. And those toys…
- James Randi
- Home of the James Randi Educational Foundation. Skepticism can be entertaining - who knew?
- Password Safe
- So many sites, so many passwords. What are you gonna do? Write them down? Use the same one all the time? Make 'em short and easy to remember? No, dumbass. If you're running Windows, you use Password Safe. It's free, it's secure (Bruce Schneier wrote the damn thing, that should inspire some confidence), and it works. Come up with one really good password (that mystical combination of long + cryptic + somehow memorable) and use that to store the rest of your passwords and IDs. It will even generate new, random passwords when you need them for new sites. Life is good.
